Workshop

  • In this phase of a value study functions are identified and analysed . A value study concentrated upon functions, and the cost and worth of those functions.
  • Certain key questions are asked during the analyusis of functions namely:
- what does it do ?
- what must it do ?
- what does the functions cost ?
- What is the functions worth ?

Technique developed to identify and analyse functions included Functional Hierachies and the use of Function Analysis System Technique (FAST)

These techniques commence with the more global functions of the total system and then extend to specific functions of individual components. They can also be completed in the reverse order.

They provide the basis upon which alternatives may be generated and evaluated to eliminate or combine functions, and to ensure compatibility betwen functions within the whole systems.

The function definition is expressed in active verb and measurable noun terms.

Attempts to identify and define the functions (s) of an item can often result in several descriptions of many sentences

In VE, function is best expressed using two words: a verb, and its noun object.

The verb defines the action required (it may generate, support, control, restrain, pump, protect, trasmit, etc).

The noun describes what is acted upon (electricity, load, temperaure, force, liquids, surfaces, sound, etc)

This noun must be measurable because a specific value will be assigned to it in the evaluation process, when cost is related to function

E.g. the function of a water service line to a roadside rest area could be define as " provide services".

This services, not being readily measurable, does not eanble us to seek alternatives intelligently.

On the other hand, if we define the functions as " transports water,' the noun in the definition is measurable, and accepted alternatives, being dependent upon the quantity of water being transported, can be determined
